Each flavour of scheduling has its own characteristics for presenting a type of
relationship between; appointment, Contact (resource), Location and task. In general
terms, a schedule captures a commitment that has a specific start and a specific end that
will usually present a duration along a timescale. What differentiates a type, or flavour,
of scheduling is the orientation of the timescale - for instance, a vertical timescale is
often viewed for appointment scheduling similar to a day timer or Outlook style of
scheduling that may be used for confirming customer sporting events such as soccer, football, hockey, Olympics etc. In contrast, a horizontal timescale will often imply resource planning, project management and resource scheduling for world soccer, football and olympic sporting venues for instance.
In context of component software, each flavour requires its own set of internal routines,
algorithms and business logic to appropriately manage the primary entities - Appointments, Contacts (Resources), Locations and Tasks.
The complexities of scheduling have not diminished over the last twenty years, if at all,
scheduling has become even more complex as our work forces and work places become more sophisticated and the demand for flexibility increases.
