Field Service Management and DBI Controls

VIEW

Supply chains start with research and development, raw material sourcing, logistics kicks in with shipping and transportation, transitioning through multiple layers of production to where products are packaged and then shipped for end use. Toward the end of the supply chain often requires implementation, installation, warranty and ongoing service by a skilled workforce. Field Service Management.  Whether packaged  or custom built, field services applications provide service organizations and contractors with intuitive insights for fulfulling Service Order Processing, Dispatch and Scheduling, Contract Administration, Preventive Maintenance, Returns Management, as well as Payment Processing and External Systems Integration.

THE CHALLENGE

In a few short months Total Fire Protection of Ottawa Canada reimagined a dated work order scheduling system into a fully scalable, integrated solution hardened for future commercialization. Outdated architecture, waning technology and cumbersome business rules motivated Total Fire to step back, look at their business today, take stock of its evolution from the beginning 40 years ago, highlight current demands from an ever growing clientele to envisioning how their current business processes could be more effectively supported.

An old data grid style interface on an outdated data platform was really starting to hinder their client focused success. Time had come to compile forty years of Fire Protection business experience, apply new scalable technologies for an efficient customer prioritized workorder management solution.

HOW WE DID IT

The vision started with the concept of an intuitive, big-picture, planning board that would present customer workorders allowing resource managers the detailed information to apply the requirements of each workorder with the right resources, in the right places at the right times with fluid ease. Other business support systems were in the process of being transitioned to SQL Server and now too was the time to make this critical change for Total Fire's resource planning.

Resources being tight, as with every business today, Total Fire's IT group knew they had to be timely and cost efficient with their development of a new Fire Protection enterprise resource planning (ERP) solution. Current, scalable system platforms decided, the team knew that purchasing development tools, over custom building their own, would be the most effective. Their search for development tools landed on DBI Technologies Inc's commercial suite of UI/UX design, data management and resource planning component software. Licenses were purchased and development started.

Business growth demanded the tight IT resource group to focus on the most urgent needs forcing redevelopment of the resource planning system to the back-burner. It wasn't long before growing business demands started to turn the heat up on that back-burner. Total Fire's IT resources at their limit, an inquiry was made to DBI - "who better would know how to integrate their own tools" thought Chris Gladwell. Would DBI have the resources to help out?

That simple inquiry turned into a detailed conversation, which turned into a detailed set of system requirements, that struck a project plan, a defined timeline and a resulting budget to add DBI's consulting resources and bring Total Fire Protection's resource planning solution to life.

WHAT IT DOES

“DBI Technologies' ctxListView, ctxTreeView, ctxCalendar, ctxDropDate, ctxDropMenu, ctxTips, and ctxSchedule controls offer an efficient way to present scheduled and unscheduled service orders to the dispatcher for sorting, selecting, scheduling, unscheduling and of course reporting.

To schedule an order, the dispatcher uses the DBI ListView control to select the work order and service technician, then transitions to the Calendar to select a date, and then drags the unscheduled workd order to an available start time for the eligible Team Resource. The dispatcher can then increase or decrease the time period allocated to the order by simply resizing the appointment with the mouse.
